Can suede shoes be cleaned?
Yes, suede shoes can be cleaned, but not with water and soap. Suede is leather with the nap raised, so soaking it flattens the surface, leaves tide marks and can shrink the shoe. At WhizzFix in St Julian's, Malta, we clean suede and nubuck shoes, boots and sneakers dry first, treat marks with suede-specific products, then brush the nap back up. Prices start at €35 a pair.
What we can fix on suede
- General dirt and dust. Almost always comes out fully.
- Water marks and rain spots. Usually evened out by re-wetting the whole panel in a controlled way and drying it evenly.
- Oil and grease. Fresh marks respond well. Old set-in oil improves but can leave a shadow.
- Scuffs and shiny patches. The nap is lifted with a brush and, where needed, a suede eraser.
- Colour fading. Suede can be re-dyed in the same or a darker colour. Lighter is not possible.
What to do at home before you bring them in
- Let mud dry completely, then knock it off. Do not rub it in.
- Do not use wipes, sprays or a wet cloth.
- Keep them out of direct sun, which fades suede unevenly.
